‘BJP’s Dalal Go Back’: Protests Force MLA Aminul Haque Laskar to Leave Congress Bhawan
A review meeting held at the Hailakandi District Congress office on Saturday (May 30) descended into chaos after a section of party workers staged a protest against Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar, accusing him of maintaining close ties with the BJP.
The meeting, organised to review the party’s performance in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, was attended by Aminul Haque Laskar and other Congress leaders. However, tensions flared when members of the District Youth Congress and other party workers raised slogans against the MLA, leading to a heated confrontation inside the Congress Bhawan.
Protesters alleged that Laskar was acting as a “double agent” and working in the interests of the BJP while continuing to remain in the Congress. They accused him of contributing to the party’s current organisational troubles and held him responsible for weakening the Congress in the region.
During the protest, workers chanted slogans such as “Aminul Haque Laskar Hai Hai”, “BJP’s Dalal Go Back”, and “BJP’s Dalal Murdabad”. The Congress office echoed with slogans as demonstrators demanded accountability from the MLA.
According to the protesting members, their allegations stem from Laskar’s reported meetings with Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Dass of the BJP. They claimed that the MLA had met the Speaker, felicitated him with garlands and a traditional Assamese gamosa, and was also allegedly seen visiting BJP offices. Based on these incidents, the protesters alleged that he was working for the BJP while using the Congress platform.
Visuals from the scene showed heated verbal exchanges between Laskar and some party workers. Finger-pointing and arguments were witnessed inside the office premises, although the conversations were not clearly audible. Altercations were also seen involving some protesters and the MLA’s security personnel.
The situation remained tense for nearly 30 minutes, during which both sides engaged in intense arguments. Witnesses reported incidents of pushing and jostling among those present. As the protest intensified, Aminul Haque Laskar eventually left the Congress Bhawan with the assistance of his security personnel.
