Borkhola: Thousands of Birds Find Safe Haven in Rahman’s Home

In a rare and remarkable example of coexistence between humans and nature, a family in Bhuirbail under the Borkhola constituency of Cachar has turned their home into a thriving sanctuary for thousands of birds over nearly two decades, offering them shelter, protection and a place to breed, even as such safe spaces continue to disappear elsewhere.

The house of Sofikur Rahman Laskar has become a refuge for a wide variety of birds including egrets, cormorants, mynas and several smaller species. Every evening, the area fills with the sound of chirping as large flocks return to roost in the bamboo groves and betel nut trees surrounding the house.

Family members said the birds not only spend their nights there but also build nests, lay eggs and raise their young within the premises. Despite several challenges, the family has continued to protect them.

Laskar’s nephew said his uncle’s care and protection have turned the place into a safe haven. He added that the birds have been living there for at least 10 to 15 years. “If anyone tries to harm them, my uncle defends them,” he said. He also noted that the site has gradually become a local attraction, drawing curious visitors from nearby areas.

However, the effort comes with difficulties. The presence of thousands of birds leads to strong odour due to droppings, making daily life uncomfortable. The family has also faced disputes with neighbours and relatives over protecting the birds, with some matters even reaching the police.

During storms, birds often fall from trees or enter the house for shelter. The family rescues and cares for them until conditions improve, after which they are released back outside. This has become part of their daily routine.

Many locals gather near the house in the evenings to witness the sight and sound of thousands of birds settling in. For the Rahman family, the inconvenience is secondary to their commitment to protecting the birds, whom they now consider part of their extended household.

Birds play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They help in seed dispersal, pollination, and controlling insect populations, making them vital for a healthy ecosystem. However, their survival is increasingly under threat due to deforestation, urban expansion, pollution, and hunting. Many species are losing their natural habitats and struggling to adapt to rapid environmental changes caused by human activity.

In such a time, stories like that of the Rahman family offer a rare sense of hope. Their commitment to protecting and coexisting with birds reflects a deep sense of responsibility towards nature and reminds us that compassion still exists. It reinforces the belief that even small human efforts can make a meaningful difference in preserving biodiversity.
