Burglary in Silchar Railway Staff Quarters, golden ornaments worth 20 lakhs stolen
A house break-in at Silchar Railway Station Staff Quarters resulted in the burglary of gold worth rupees 20 lakhs among other valuables. This incident happened last Saturday night at the quarter of Zakir Hussain Laskar, who works as the Station Superintendent at Silchar Railway Station. Zakir Hussain had locked his house as he and the family left for the ancestral house to attend a family function. While they were away, the thieves took advantage of this situation and broke into their house. Other than the gold, the burglars also took whatever cash they found home and broke the almirah and other lockers inside the house. Tarapur Police was informed about this and an investigation has been launched into the matter.
On Saturday afternoon, when Zakir Hussain Laskar and his family had left for their ancestral home after locking the door and gates of his staff quarter at the Railway Station Colony in Tarapur, they had informed their next-floor neighbour to keep an eye on their house. On the same night, burglars entered the building and broke into the house. They broke the lock of the iron gate and also the door to enter the house. Using a vegetable cutlass, the burglars also opened the almirah and inside the safe, they found gold ornaments, which according to the house owner amounts upto 20 lakh rupees.
Zakir Hussain Laskar said, “When I asked the other residents of the building if they heard any sound of breaking-in, they said they did hear some noise on Saturday midnight, but didn’t bother to see thinking we were making them. But the fact that I informed them that we were leaving, didn’t seem to have any impact on them. When I returned home today (Monday), I found both the doors to my apartment wide open, but no one in the building bothered to see why they were open throughout two days and nights or even call me to ask”.
On December 26, when Zakir Hussain Laskar returned back to Silchar and found his assets stolen, he lodged an FIR at the Tarapur Outpost. The Police launched an investigation into the matter. A Sniffer dog is being used to investigate the area for any clues. Even though the burglars took away all the valuables, they left the laptop in its place.
