Cachar Court Sentences Mother to Life Imprisonment for Murder of Two Minor Daughters
A Fast Track Court in Cachar has sentenced a 24-year-old woman to life imprisonment for the murder of her two daughters. The case dates back to September 1, 2023, under the Kachudaram Police Station, and the judgment was delivered on Thursday (April 23) by the court of Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) Bankim Sharma.
The convict, Ajmira Begum Laskar, was found guilty of killing her daughters, Rajima Begum (3) and Fatima Begum (10 months), at Baurikandi Part-I under Kachudaram Police Station of Sonai. The incident had triggered widespread outrage in the locality when it came to light.
According to the prosecution, the children’s father, Babul Haque Laskar, had lodged an FIR against his wife following the incident. In his statement to the police, he said he had married Ajmira as his second wife after already having a daughter from his first marriage. Ajmira later gave birth to two daughters.
Police records stated that the couple allegedly had marital disputes before the crime, following which Ajmira had gone to her parental home. Around 15 days before the incident, Babul allegedly brought her back.
The night before the tragedy, Ajmira slept in one room with the two children, while Babul slept in an adjacent room. At around 6 the next morning, he reportedly found both daughters unconscious inside the room and raised an alarm, drawing neighbours to the house.
During questioning, Ajmira allegedly confessed to killing the children. Family members later told investigators that she admitted taking the girls to a pond in front of the house before dawn, drowning them, and then bringing the bodies back into the room.
The post-mortem examination report stated that both children died due to asphyxia caused by antemortem drowning. It further noted that the lungs of both victims were filled with fluid, confirming drowning as the cause of death. Talking to Barak Bulletin back in September 2023, Ajmira stated, “I did not go to the pond with the intention of killing my children. I went to the pond to end all three of our lives. We remained submerged for some time, and then I surfaced, but my kids did not make it.”

Following the investigation, police arrested Ajmira and later submitted a chargesheet. After examining witnesses and evidence during the trial, the court convicted her under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, which mandates punishment for murder.
She was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs. 20,000. In the event of default of payment, she will have to undergo an additional six months’ imprisonment.
The prosecution was represented by advocate Pradip Kumar Patowary, while T. Baidya appeared for the defence.
