Cachar: No Flood Alert Yet, DDMA Says Fully Prepared After CWC Advisory

The Central Water Commission has issued an advisory warning of possible flood-like conditions due to continuous rainfall across Northeast India, with water levels in the Barak River likely to rise between May 1 and May 6, raising concerns in Barak Valley districts, particularly Cachar and Karimganj. However, the Cachar district administration has clarified that no official flood alert has been issued so far.

According to the advisory, sustained rainfall may lead to a rise in river levels across Assam, including the Brahmaputra and Barak river systems. Several districts such as Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Goalpara, Dhubri, Cachar and Karimganj were mentioned as areas requiring close monitoring.

When contacted, the District Commissioner of Cachar stated that there was “no such information” regarding any flood alert. Subsequently, Devid Borah, Additional Deputy Commissioner and associated with the District Disaster Management Authority, reached out to clarify the situation. He stated that the communication from the Central Water Commission was only an advisory and not a flood alert.

“It is the rainy season and a rise in water level is expected. That is why such advisories are issued. However, no flood alert has been declared,” he said, adding that authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

He further informed that all relevant departments, including the DDMA, municipality and the Department of Water Resources, have been alerted as a precautionary measure. Officials are actively keeping track of river conditions and preparedness measures are already in place.

As part of ongoing monitoring efforts, the District Commissioner recently visited several vulnerable locations, including Rangirkhal, Longaikhal, Singirkhal and key embankments such as the Bethukandi dyke.

The administration also held a preparedness meeting with agencies including the Army and Border Security Force a few days ago to ensure coordinated response in case of any emergency.

Officials have assured that the district is fully prepared to handle any flood-like situation if it arises. For now, residents have been advised to remain alert but not to panic, as no official flood warning has been issued.
