Cachar Police arrests Bangladeshi citizen for illegally trespassing into India

A citizen of Bangladesh accused of trespassing the border to enter India via Tripura has been arrested in Lakhipur, Cachar district. He was detained by the locales on Sunday when he was loitering in the streets of Lakhipur after illegally entering the state through Tripura. The Bangladeshi citizen was identified to be Oli Ullah, aged 50, of Kalakati village of the Barishal district under the Chandpur thana jurisdiction in Bangladesh.

The locals in Lakhipur said that their suspicions arose when Oli Ullah was wandering around the Lakhipur town under eerie circumstances. He was immediately detained and interrogated. During the interrogation, some incoherent words came up in his statement which further exacerbated their doubts. The locals became more suspicious of him as he could not answer his name and address correctly. Later, however, he confessed that he was indeed a Bangladeshi citizen. After that, the locals handed over Oli Ullah to the Lakhipur thana.

A highly placed source in the Cachar Police said that, according to Oli Ullah’s statement, he crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border through a river and trespassed into the state of Tripura before ending up in Lakhipur where he was detained by the locales under suspicion.

According to the police, a case has been registered against Oli Ullah for entering India illegally. After presenting the arrested Bangladeshi citizen in the Lakhipur court today, after which he was sent to the custody of the Silchar Central Jail.
