Cachar to have more traffic signal points, CCTV monitoring to reduce criminal activities

A meeting was held at the deputy commissioner of Cachar’s office to discuss the possible ways and means to curtail criminal activities like snatching, hit and run among others. Installation of CCTV cameras and more traffic signal points were the obvious contentions.

A PPT was shown by consultants for two projects under CIDF for Silchar, viz City surveillance system through CCTV camera installation, and traffic signals and lights at City. The presentation was also attended by MLAs of Silchar and Udharbond, officials of police and traffic department, representative of Municipal Board, Development Authority among other line departments and leading citizens.

On thorough analysis of presentation, the committee opined to have a joint survey of all traffic points by the consultant, police department, SMB and T&CP shortly to take final decision for the project. “The survey is expected to commence shortly,” said the DC Keerthi Jalli while speaking with Barak Bulletin.

She added, “There is a felt need for more traffic signal points and CCTV monitoring to reduce the number of nefarious activities in the town. A joint survey of proposed points with technical expert, Police, SMB officials will be taken and a list of such places will be finalised optimising existing budget.”

Earlier, in an interaction with Barak Bulletin, DGP Assam Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta had also emphasised on the importance of the CCTV Camera. “Installation of CCTV cameras will not only play a role in criminal identification but it is also a potent tool for traffic management,” said the DGP.

He had added, “During one of my field visits to Barak Valley, a plan was formulated to install CCTV cameras in major towns such as Silchar and Karimganj. In order to optimize the benefit of technology, proper identification of hotspots and augmentation of human surveillance in the shadow areas will be considered to address such nature crimes.”
