Contractor brandishes gun in Silchar after conflict with locals; Police intervenes to control situation 

Tension broke in Silchar’s Kathal Road area today afternoon. A man was spotted with pistol and he went on to point it towards the crowd. Police was informed about the incident and officer in charge of Silchar Sadar Bipul Borah, officials from Rangirkhari Police Outpost rushed to the spot. 

Sajal Uddin Laskar, a resident of Kathal Road said that while he was asleep in his house, his wife saw a man entering the house with a gun. “I woke up and started screaming for help. The man was holding my brother Sirumoni Laskar at gunpoint. Our neighbours also stepped out to help and we confronted them. The man with the pistol said this is his licensed gun and he has the permission to brandish it and even open fine,” alleged Laskar.

The man with the gun has been identified as Dipak Kumar Singha and along with him, he has Tarun Kumar Singha and Biswajit Singha According to them, the locals attacked them when they visited a construction site in Kathal Road. There a conflict broke between the Singhas and Laskars allegedly after the latter obstructed the construction work. All three of them were detained by Police and the pistol was seized. Police is interrogating the three detained individuals and investigating the matter.

“The situation in Kathal Road is under control and normalcy has been restored. The Singhas are constructing a building on a plot of land donated by their father-in-law. The conflict grew bigger when the locals gheraoed the Singhas and that is when Dipak Kumar Singha opened his licensed gun for self-defence. We are investigating the matter to ascertain facts,” informed OC Silchar Sadar.

While the OC says, Dipak Kumar Singha removed his gun for self-defence, video footage reveals that he had entered the residence of Laskar with the gun. However, at what stage was the video filmed is unknown.
