Cricket season in Silchar from Friday, pitch to favour the batsmen says Curator Ram

After prolonged nine long months, the ball will finally roll on the 22-yard pitch at Silchar DSA on Friday marking the advent of the cricket season. This time the season is going to start with the ‘B division’ tournament. Usually, the season starts with Super Division League however this time the League could not be started as several big clubs are yet to complete inter-district transfers whose deadline is November 30. So DSA decided to start the season with ‘B division.’

On Friday, Madhya Sahar Sangskritik Sangstha will play against Udaya Sangha in the debut match of the tournament. The second match of the day will be played between Classmates Union and Arunachal SS. This time 24 teams are taking part in a league cum knockout tournament.

The association has prepared a total of eight wickets for the upcoming season. However, the ‘B division’ will be played in two pitches only and DSA will remain the venue for all the matches.

DSA pitch curator Ram Behra said two wickets would help the batsmen. In fact, two practice matches have already been played to understand the nature of the wickets through which he made a guess about them. “The wicket will help the batsmen. However, the pacers will also get help from the pitch during the morning time,” he said.

Behra has been the pitch curator of Silchar DSA since 1992. He said that the football season was canceled and hence no game was played ever since then. However, it did not benefit much because in most parts of the field the green grass had grown by many inches.

Moreover, the field is looked after regularly during ongoing seasons but the covid pandemic had put a halt to the maintenance activities. The field has been made suitable for playing in a short time and the work done has been pretty good. The curator said that the outfield will be very slow in the initial matches but over time that is likely to change.
