DC Cachar inaugurates cloth and book bank in Silchar, urges people not to throw used items
Silchar Municipality has taken an unprecedented step to inaugurate a Book Bank and a Cloth Bank for the needy people of the town. Silchar municipality would collect used Cloths and books through these banks, recycle them through the bank, and make them available for needy people.
Waste management, be it solid or liquid, biodegradable or nonbiodegradable, organic or inorganic, is a concern for urban administration and planners. Environmentalists often point out the harmful repercussions of the ill management of waste. A large part of urban waste comprises clothes, books, and household items; people just throw it away after using it for a particular period, even if the item remains intact for use. Keerthi Jalli, the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar district appealed to the citizens not to throw away the old clothes and books as waste; instead, they can hand over these to Municipality Cloth and Book Bank; Municipality would recycle these items and make them usable for others.
While addressing the official inauguration program, Deputy Commissioner said that the district and municipal administration are taking many steps to make the Silchar town clear and hygienic and make citizens aware of cleanliness.
She said that while visiting the Meherpur dumping ground recently, they could find usable items from the waste about 30-40 years old; these items can be refurbished with the help of specified recycling machines. So we should think about recycling instead of throwing away the goods. DC Jalli said we don’t need to throw away our clothes and books, as these are essential goods, so we are inaugurating these Banks so that ordinary people can come and submit their excess old items here.
These Banks will be open round the clock and maintain a register of the donors, DC also said. Out little effort can be beneficial for the needy, and we will enhance the recycling and refurbishing systems.
Jessica Lalsim, the executive officer of Silchar Municipality, said that the banks had been inaugurated as per the advice of the Deputy Commissioner; she also urged ordinary citizens to donate their unused books and old clothes to the banks.
After the inauguration program Deputy Commissioner, Municipality executive officer, and other staff donated their books and clothes to the bank.
