“Didn’t get ticket because I am Hindu,” Papan Deb resigns from all responsibilities in Congress
The Congress has finally announced its list of candidates from Barak Valley for the upcoming assembly election. Names like Tamal Kanti Banik from Silchar, Misbahul Islam Laskar from Borkhola, Sanjib Rai from Katlicherra have come up in the list. At the same time, candidates like Rumi Nath and Papon Deb have been left out.
Naturally, there was some frustration in the minds of the excluded candidates. Papon Deb even went on to the extent of claiming that it was because of his Hindu background he did not get a ticket. He has relieved himself of all the responsibilities of the party and has decided to remain as an ordinary member, which was shared through a social media post.
Papon Deb said, “The Congress has put forward its list and Misbahul Islam Laskar has been nominated as the candidate from Borkhola. I congratulate him and wish him well in the elections. The Congress party did not nominate me because I am a Hindu. But I am a secular person, I will keep on working in the Congress in the interest of the people and the country.”
In another post, he wrote, “I am freeing myself from all kinds of senior responsibilities in Congress. He served as the General Secretary of the District Congress and Chairman Of The Seba Team.
The Congress party is contesting the elections in alliance with the AIUDF. After nearly a week of negotiations, the party’s second candidate list has finally been announced, which includes all the seats in the Barak Valley. The candidates for the region are Tamal Kanti Banik in Silchar, Misbahul Islam Laskar in Borkhola, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha in North Karimganj, Siddique Ahmed in South Karimganj, Sanjeeb Rai in Katlicherra, Kamakhya Prasad Mala in Dholai, Ajit Singh in Udharbond, Mukesh Pandey in Lakhipur, Khalil Uddin Mazumder in Katigorah, Shambhu Singh Mala in Ratabari, Sachin Sahu in Patharkandi.
The cry of a mutiny that was initially heard inside Congress after the announcement of the BJP list of candidates has seemed to have subsided as of now, but yet far from quashing it.
