Digitisation: Assam University to launch Examination app, will conduct admissions online
In a pioneering move, Assam University, Silchar has decided to bring all the affiliated colleges and the departments under one umbrella. The move to digitise the admission process to integrate all the affiliated degree colleges, as well as the departments of the University, will manifest in an online admission portal, where students can apply for multiple colleges or departments under the University to choose from. This means any student looking to pursue an undergraduate course in any affiliated college or postgraduate course in any department under Assam University can apply online sitting at home, all in one integrated platform.
The University is also planning to build an online examination portal of its own, to conduct online tests or internal assessments while sitting at home. Regarding this initiative, a contract has been signed by the University with a Kolkata-based company DCG Data-Core Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd to develop the app and the online admission portal.
This digitisation announcement was made yesterday in a meeting where the contract was signed in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, Registrar Dr. Pradosh Kiran Nath, who signed on behalf of Assam University, Debashish Sadhya, GM, DCG Data-Core Systems (India), Dr. Suprabir Dutta Roy, Controller of Examinations, Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Director of College Development Council, Prof. Sudipta Roy, Chairman of Implementation Committee, and Partha Choudhury, Technical Head, DCG Data-Core Systems.
Regarding this digitisation move, Controller of Examinations of the Assam University, Silchar, Dr. Suprabir Dutta Roy said, “The initiative has been taken keeping in mind the safety and convenience of the students. All students who desire to take admission in the Assam University or any of its affiliated colleges just need to visit the admission web portal where they can choose which degree college or department of the University, they are interested in getting admitted to.”
He added, “The affiliated colleges would set their own individual admission criteria for the students in the portal, to which any student having those prior qualifications can apply simultaneously in different courses or colleges. However, when the opting student decides on a particular course in any college or department, all the other applications in the other courses or colleges will automatically get canceled. Even though the contracted company will develop the portal and the app, they will be monitored by us and the affiliated colleges only.”
The University will also upgrade its present examination infrastructure to take it to the next level by launching an examination app. “This examination app is specially designed for class tests, internal assessment tests, etc. Conference apps like Google Meet cannot host more than 250 participants at once, and here we are talking about thousands. In our University app, the affiliated colleges and the departments will keep a database of their students so there’s no need of registering any name. The students will get updates regarding tests and examinations before their exam in e-mail or WhatsApp. In the database, all the records like mark sheet and backlogs, if any, will be catalogued for the convenience of both the students and the University administration to function seamlessly’, said the Controller of Examinations.
The project will be completed by June 2021 and it will be effective from the upcoming admission drive for the session of 2021-22. After it eventually gets underway, students wouldn’t need to go to colleges to sit for exams or get admission, and the required fees can be paid online in the portal itself.
