Fake Cop Scam: Cachar Man Re-Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer

Another shocking case of deception; a 23-year-old man from Cachar has been caught once again for impersonating a police officer. The accused, identified as Samid Hussain Barbhuiya, son of Waisuddin Barbhuiya of Khelma Part-VI under Kalain Police Station, was apprehended on August 14 (Thursday) at Kalain.

According to police, Samid had been posing as an Assam Police officer and displaying photographs of himself in uniform. He reportedly collected money from several people at Rupaibali under Lakhipur Police Station, falsely assuring them jobs as drivers in the Assam Police. Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Kalain Police Station (Case No. 88/2025) under Sections 319(2)/318(2)/316(2)/112(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused was later forwarded to judicial custody.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, while addressing the media, said the accused was caught after a secret tip-off about his activities. Samid was allegedly posing as a sub-inspector and demanding money from young men and women in exchange for jobs as drivers in Assam Police.

Mahatta explained that once the information reached them, an investigation was launched. “We found that he had police department uniforms of every type—from summer to winter. He had even made a nameplate in his name. People would easily mistake him for a real police officer,” the SSP said.

According to the SSP, the elaborate set-up with official-looking uniforms and accessories made Samid appear convincing to the unsuspecting public, enabling him to cheat several job-seekers.

This is not the first time Samid has landed in police custody, for such offences. Back in December 2021, he was arrested in a similar case when he uploaded a photograph of himself wearing the uniform of a sub-inspector. Police confirmed the image was authentic, and several people also testified that Samid had introduced himself publicly as a sub-inspector, claiming he had secured a job with Assam Police.

Investigations at the time also revealed a disturbing past: before donning the police uniform, Samid had allegedly posed as a doctor, even treating unsuspecting patients and prescribing medicines without any qualifications.

Despite his earlier arrest, it appears Samid learnt little from his previous encounters with the law. His latest arrest shows a continued pattern of fraud, using uniforms and false promises to exploit innocent people.
