Filing of NRC claims to begin on September 25: Supreme Court
Earlier today, the High Court has ordered the continuation of NRC claims and objections for those who had been left out in the draft. As per the order, the filing of claims would begin on September 25, and will go on for the next 60 days.
In final draft of the NRC, published in July, more than 40 lakh of the total 3.29 crore applicants were rejected. The draft has been criticised by the opposition parties, mainly Trinamool Congress which called it an attack on Muslims.
The application process for the NRC started in May 2015 and a total of 6.5 crore documents were received from 68.27 lakh families across Assam. The NRC is a proof of Indian citizenship of people residing in Assam.
