Fire in Hailakandi Civil hospital; no patients harmed

A narrow escape for the hundreds admitted in S K Roy civil hospital in Hailakandi. Today afternoon, a massive fire broke in the hospital premises, but fire brigade engines reached immediately and brought the flames under control.

As informed by the hospital authorities, there were a few cars parked in the hospital premises and those cars caught fire today afternoon. “Relatives and attendants of patients often go that side for a smoke. We are assuming that today too, someone threw an unstubbed cigarette or bidi which caused the fire,” said a senior official employed in SK Roy Civil Hospital.

The official added that no patients were harmed because of the fire as it did not spread to the zones where the wards are. “Two cars got burnt as we can see at this stage. At the moment I don’t think any hospital property got damaged, but we will get to know more about the cause of the fire and damage once we get a detailed report from the fire brigade,” adds the official.

The burnt vehicles are not functional and were only kept there. “This fire could have caused a far bigger damage. But thanks to the firemen, who reached on time and brought it under control,” said the official.

The patients admitted in the hospital certainly had a narrow escape. But, the attendants must be more careful with what they do with their cigarette and bidi.
