
Firing in Shamtilla, Jirighat; Police suspects involvement of militant outfit NSCN IM
Sounds of gunfire shocked the people of Shamtilla area in Jirighat located along the Cachar – Manipur border. One civilian suffered bullet injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
SDPO Lakhipur, Kulapradeep Bhattacharya rushed to the spot and soon followed the Superintendent of Police, Cachar Ramandeep Kaur. Both of them, along with their teams are investigating the matter.
The Police is suspecting involvement of militant outfit NCSN I-M behind the firing. However, the SP informed that they are still “ascertaining” the reason behind opening the fire.
For the freshers, NSCN stands for National Socialist Council of Nagaland and it started an underground Naga Federal government having both civil and military wings. Later, a disagreement surfaced within the outfit leaders over the issue of commencing dialogue with the Indian Government.
On 30 April 1988, the NSCN split into two factions; the NSCN-K led by Khaplang, and the NSCN-IM, led by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah. The split was accompanied by a spate of violence and clashes between the factions. In 1997 ceasefire agreement were made between NSCN and government of India. Later NSCN(K) abrogated the ceasefire agreement.
