Illegal barricades removed from Shillong road, "No body can ask for NRC document as a proof" says Lakshmanan
While Supreme Court and Ministry of Home affairs made it clear in numerous occasions that no government body can take any decision on the basis of National Register of Citizens draft published on July 30, 2018, not all obeyed the order. Few students body of Meghalaya created barricades and started asking for NRC documents. In some occassions they even tore apart the printout copy written in Bengali script.
The harassment was questioned by member of parliament Sushmita Dev in the monsoon session and she appealed to the Ministry of home affairs to immediately take action against those harrasing the passengers of Barak Vallley. Our correspondent spoke to the deputy comissioner of Cachar and S Lakshmanan assured that all the barricades has been removed and no students authority or any other body can ask any passenger for any proof. “Senior Assam government officials spoke to the Meghalaya counter part and the gates have been removed,” informs Lakshmanan.
The deputy commissioner clarifies that Kheleriat Police administration has the right to set up anti infiltration units and check identity cards of passengers travelling through the state of Meghalaya “But they cannot ask for NRC document or any thing related to NRC,” Lakshmanan asserts.
The passengers travelling from Barak Valley were primarily harassed by various students union bodies of Meghalaya. Lakshmanan asserts that no student union representative can ask for any proof from anybody, only the Police can.
If this restricts violence against the Barak Valley citizens, only time will tell.
