In the midst of the Corona pandemic, the Silchar District Sports Association (DSA) has organized a high-intensity Women Football tournament successfully. For this, the Samayik Prasanga newspaper group extended a helping hand as the sponsor. Samayik Prasanga has been working with the DSA for the past few years for the improvement and expansion of women’s football. This women’s football tournament was first held in the year 2006. Last year, the tournament had to be called off due to the pandemic. And even at different times in the past, this tournament had been postponed or cancelled for various reasons. Despite this, the women’s football tournament is very popular in this region. However, practically speaking, the DSA is not being able to utilise the popularity of women’s football effectively.
This time, the Kalain Sports Club has become the champion in the Samayik Prasanga Cup Women’s league cum knockout football. In the final, they beat the defending champions Green Hornet Club of Silchar by 5-4 in the tiebreaker. In doing so, the Kalain Sports club has successfully maintained its unbeaten streak in the tournament. The last time Kalain had lost to this Green Honey team was in the final of the last edition of this tournament. Hence, it can be said that they have taken revenge for the defeat of two years back.
In the recently concluded women’s football tournament, a total of 5 teams participated. Although women’s football has been around since 2006, the number of teams has always been limited to 4-5 till now. Which is not a good indicator of progress for the local women’s football. Whereas women’s football is quite popular in this region. The real problem is that there has been only one tournament a year since 2006. This number has not increased till today which is a failure of the Silchar DSA.
Despite having a good dearth of talent, the women footballers here do not get much exposure. Only one tournament a year is what they’re blessed with. However, several women footballers from Silchar have represented the state team. Women footballers have a decent craze in the Kalain and Lakhipur regions of the Barak Valley. There are two or three women’s football teams in Kalain. Every year multiple tournaments are happening there. Despite the limited scope, regular women’s football is being organized in Kalain. In this aspect, the Silchar DSA is far behind them. Rural players get extra motivation even when they come to play in the city. But at the moment, they are not getting any motivation at all. They have to be contented with playing two matches. Many players in the rural areas do not get enough opportunities. And those who do get it, are not being able to showcase their talents due to very limited opportunities. The more opportunities a player gets, the more his talent will develop.
The time has come to think out of the box and see from a different perspective. If one tournament is organised throughout the year, then the progress of women’s football will get halted. In this case, the DSA can organize two or three camps a year by selecting the rural footballers. By doing so, it will benefit the local women’s football as the players will gain experience with more playing time. Hence, the time has come for the association to give it a new thought for the betterment of local women’s football.
