Income Tax department detains two air-passengers at Silchar Airport, seizes Rs 45 lakh cash

Based on a secret tip-off, the Income Tax department had launched an operation on Tuesday at Silchar Airport. After the flight from Guwahati to Silchar landed at Kumbirgram Airport, the officers got to action and detained two individuals.

They were searched and Rs 45 lakh cash was recovered from them. Sources in the department informed that the two detained have been identified as Zubair Hussain and Mushtaq Hussain.

“Initially they claimed to be residents of Karimganj district, however, they could not furnish any document proving the same. After the cash was seized from them, both were handed over to Cachar Police for interrogation and further investigation,” informed a source close to the development.

Senior sources in Cachar Police confirmed that both of them are being interrogated at a police station in Cachar district. The Police department did not reveal any details about the ongoing investigation.

As per available information, both Zubair and Mushtaq are residents of the Churachandpur district in Manipur. They boarded the Indigo flight from Imphal and reached Silchar via Guwahati.

Who this cash belongs to and where did it come from? In the election season, why was such a huge amount being transported physically instead of transferring digitally? What is the connection with Karimganj? There are many questions for the Police to find answers to.
