IPL Betting Racket Worth Over Rs 50 Lakh Busted In Silchar, Four Held In Two Police Raids

In what Cachar Police described as a major blow to IPL-related gambling, Silchar Police on Monday apprehended four persons from two different locations in the town and seized mobile phones, cash, notebooks containing betting calculations and other materials allegedly linked to an IPL betting network.

According to information shared by Cachar Police through its official media channel, police acted on reliable inputs that IPL-related gambling activities were being carried out in Silchar. Based on the information, a raid was conducted at Udayan Complex Road in Das Colony, Silchar.

During the raid, three persons were apprehended. They have been identified as Suman Roy, 42, son of Subodh Roy, resident of NH Way, Silchar; Suman Roy, 48, son of late Mahesh Roy, resident of Udayan Complex, Das Colony, Silchar; and Nitai Roy, 40, son of late Narayan Roy, resident of NH Way, MP Sarani, Silchar.

Police said they recovered and seized five notebooks containing records of IPL gambling calculations, cash amounting to Rs 30,190, seven mobile phones allegedly being used through the Om777 app, and one black-coloured bag from their possession.

In a separate raid at Ashram Road, police apprehended another alleged gambler identified as Sanjay Das, son of Ranjan Das, resident of Sunlight Hospital area, Ashram Road, under Silchar Police Station. From his possession, police recovered and seized two mobile handsets and cash amounting to Rs 15,100.

As per police, the apprehended persons and seized articles were brought to Silchar Police Station after observing all legal formalities for further necessary action.

Police have stated that the alleged bookies had been carrying out gambling activities for several days and the value of the betting network is estimated to be more than Rs 50 lakh so far.

The crackdown comes at a time when betting and real-money gaming have come under sharper regulatory scrutiny in India. The Government of India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games, including games involving stakes, and also restricts their promotion and facilitation. The Centre has argued that the law is aimed at curbing financial harm, addiction and illegal betting-linked networks.
