Jirighat Police seizes lorry carrying Burmese betel nuts again

The Jirighat police have once again confiscated a lorry transporting Burmese betel nuts, just a week after a similar incident. The police intercepted a 12-wheeler lorry, bearing the registration number NL 01A 61646, during a naka checking of lorries travelling from Manipur towards Silchar. While the police managed to seize the lorry alongwith the illegal Burmese betel nuts, the driver and co-driver fled the scene and are yet to be caught.

The lorries were lined up next to National Highway No. 37 for inspection when the police noticed something amiss with the longer lorry carrying the suspected Burmese betel nuts. The additional length of the vehicle was utilized to create a separate chamber where around 3 to 4 tons of Burnese betel nuts was stored. From the back of the lorry, it appeared empty, but the police grew suspicious and discovered the hidden bags of Burmese betel nuts during their search.

Despite the police’s efforts to apprehend the driver and co-driver, they managed to escape before they could be caught. The Jirighat police have seized the lorry and the Burmese betel nuts, and are currently on the lookout for the absconding individuals.
