Karim Uddin Barbhuiya Holds Anti-Drug Rally on Gandhi Jayanti, Vows to Visit Every House in Sonai to Raise Awareness

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, a massive anti-drug rally was organized in Sonai, Cachar, aiming to build a drug-free society. The rally, initiated by Sonai’s MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, saw participation from over 1,200 people, including men, women, and students from various schools and colleges.

The rally, titled “Gandhi Ji’s Dream of Drugs and Intoxication Free Assam,” began from the Barohali Municipality gate and concluded at Sonai Bazar’s playground after a 3-kilometer foot march. It was a powerful display of unity, with participants from all sections of society, including intellectuals, political leaders, and NGOs.

MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya expressed his concern about the growing menace of drugs in the region. He stated, “Today we have started an anti-drug rally with people of all sections of society in Sonai. I get frequent messages from guardians worried about their children falling into the trap of drugs. We need wider participation and awareness. There are drugs everywhere. In the last 6 to 12 months there has been an increased number of people falling into the traps of drugs. We have to aware our people, go from door to door and explain our people with wider participation. Matri Shakti has taken a unique step in this, their participation is crucial. Women face the brunt of this problem. I am happy to see wider participation from the students”

He further emphasised the importance of door-to-door campaigns and promised to intensify the fight against drugs in his constituency. Barbhuiya added, “From January 1, we will start our door-to-door campaign, visiting every home from 6 AM to 10 AM until we have covered all homes in Sonai.”

“As an immediate step”, the MLA said, “After Dura Puja, we will hold candle marches and visit all the areas of Sonai to increase awareness. In the coming days, we will give our best to make Sonai, drug free. Today we have this one to two hours of foot march but this is just the start. Today on the auspicious day of Mahalaya and Gandhi Jayanta, I take this pledge to continue this movement further.”.

The 3km long foot march saw wider participation exceeding 1200 people. The rally marks a significant step towards making Sonai a drug-free constituency, with more initiatives planned in the coming months to sustain the movement.
