Kaushik Rai Wins Lakhipur as Massive Lead After 14 Rounds Puts Result Beyond Mathematical Doubt

BJP candidate Kaushik Rai has effectively won the Lakhipur Assembly constituency in Cachar, with his lead now moving beyond the realm of any possible comeback. After the fourteenth round of counting, Rai has secured 1,06,700 votes, while Congress candidate M. Shanti Kumar Singh has polled 24,048 votes. That gives the BJP leader a commanding lead of 82,652 votes, sealing one of the most decisive verdicts to emerge from Cachar in this election.

It is now safe to call the election for Kaushik Rai mathematically, not just politically. Lakhipur has a total electorate of 1,78,539, and the constituency recorded a turnout of 85.57 per cent, which means the total votes cast were roughly 1,52,787. At the end of the fourteenth round, the combined tally of the two leading candidates already stands at 1,30,748 votes. That leaves only about 22,039 votes still unaccounted for, including votes for other candidates and whatever remains to be counted. Since Rai’s lead of 82,652 is far greater than the total number of remaining votes, Shanti Kumar Singh cannot overtake him even if every single one of those remaining votes were to go in his favour. On pure arithmetic, the contest is over.

For Rai, the result marks a powerful reaffirmation of his hold over Lakhipur. A minister in the Assam government and the sitting MLA from the constituency, he entered the contest as one of the BJP’s most closely watched faces in Cachar. The scale of the lead suggests not merely an advantage, but a sweeping mandate. For the Congress, meanwhile, Lakhipur has turned into a difficult battleground, with the gap widening steadily round after round and leaving little room for hope as the count progressed.

The Lakhipur result is also significant in the wider political context of Cachar and Barak Valley, where a handful of high-profile contests have drawn sharp attention. But while some seats may continue to witness movement over subsequent rounds, Lakhipur is no longer one of them. By every practical and mathematical measure, Kaushik Rai has won.
