Large Burmese Python Rescued from Tarapur Residential Area, Released Safely by Wildlife Team

Residents of Tarapur Part-6, near Shibbari Road and Sukanta Lane, witnessed an unusual wildlife rescue after a large Burmese Python was spotted close to a residential area, prompting concern among local people.

According to residents, the snake was first noticed at night near houses in the locality. Locals quickly gathered at the spot after spotting the reptile and informed wildlife rescuers. Before the rescue team arrived, a local youth managed to catch the python with the help of other residents, preventing it from moving further into the neighbourhood.

Videos recorded at the scene showed a large crowd surrounding the snake while residents took photographs and videos. One local resident said they were sitting nearby when they suddenly noticed movement and discovered the python. Another resident claimed that such a large snake had rarely been seen in the area before and estimated its weight to be around five to six kilograms.

Following the alert, members of the Barak Valley Wildlife Division reached the location and took custody of the snake. During the rescue operation, wildlife personnel explained to residents that the reptile was a Burmese Python, a non-venomous species commonly found in forests and wetlands of the region. Although not poisonous, pythons are powerful constrictors and should not be handled without proper training.

The rescuers stated that the snake had likely strayed into the locality while searching for food or shelter. Local residents expressed concern that the animal could have harmed domestic poultry or livestock if it remained in the area. Wildlife officials, however, urged people not to attack or kill such animals and instead inform rescue teams whenever wild animals enter human settlements.

After examining the python, rescuers placed it safely inside a cloth sack and transported it in an official Forest Department vehicle. Trikal Chakraborty, a wildlife conservationist working along with the Forest Department said the snake would be released deep inside a suitable forest habitat away from human settlements.

The incident attracted considerable attention from local residents, many of whom remained at the site until the rescue operation was completed. Wildlife officials used the opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife and maintaining a safe distance from rescued animals.

The successful rescue ended without any injuries to either residents or the snake, highlighting the importance of timely reporting and cooperation between local communities and wildlife rescue teams.
