Major Fire Raging in Shillongpatty’s Basundhara Building: Anxious girl jumps down the building

A major fire broke out this morning on the fourth floor of a commercial building in Silchar’s bustling Shillongpatty area, causing widespread panic among the locals. The blaze originated at a computer academy located on the fourth floor of a building named “Basundhara,”. Students stuck inside the academy had to break an iron grill and climb down the plumbing and pipes of the building to save themselves. The firefighters are still trying to extinguish the fire which has been brought under control.

The fire started today at around 11 AM in the densely populated Shillongpatty area. Locals saw smoke and flames coming out of the top floor of the building opposite Chotelal Seth School. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, but initial reports suggest a short circuit in the NICA computer class may have triggered the flames. As firefighters battled to control the fire, concerns about the fire spreading to adjacent buildings had escalated. Fortunately, the emergency response team was able to control the fire.

The fire caused chaos as many students attending classes at the computer academy were trapped inside. In a desperate bid for safety, some students managed to break an iron grill and climb down the building’s plumbing system. Others were later rescued by firefighters who responded swiftly to the emergency.

A significant response was witnessed in the area, with at least six fire engines dispatched to the scene. Numal Mahatta, the Superintendent of Police, Cachar and Additional SP Subrata Sen also arrived promptly to oversee the situation and ensure a coordinated effort to tackle the blaze. Hours after the Fire and Emergency Service workforce started working, 90% of the fire had been extinguished said SP Cachar addressing the media. At present, the fire is under control.

People from the nearby building united to help. One of them said, “We could see people were crying for help from inside the building. Many people came out to the terrace to be reduced. We climbed down the next building and using ladders we could rescue the female students stuck inside the class. Unfortunately, one student panicked and she jumped down the building and fell on the ground. She was rushed to the medical college immediately”.

The fire department is still on-site, working tirelessly to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Meanwhile, safety measures and emergency protocols are being implemented in the area. The Police have stopped the traffic movement through Shillongpatty for the emergency response team’s easy movement.
