In a remarkable display of law enforcement and vigilance, the Cachar Police carried out two successful offensives against the narcotics trade in the district yesterday, resulting in the seizure of a substantial 1.33 kilograms of heroin and the apprehension of four individuals in total.

The first operation, executed yesterday evening, was based on a tip-off received by the law enforcement agencies. A trilateral team comprising of officials of Kalain Police, CRPF and Assam Rifles conducted a search operation in Natanpur at the residence of a person named Alfaz Uddin, leading to the discovery of approximately 180 grams of heroin concealed within 16 soapboxes. Hasna Begum, the wife of Alfaz Uddin, was apprehended by the Police. Preliminary estimates suggest that the market value of the seized heroin runs into lakhs.

At night, the second operation by Cachar Police unfolded in Sonai’s Kabuganj area. The Police personnel intercepted a Kia car with the registration number AS 11 Z 6366, bound for Silchar. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a substantial haul, with 1.15 kilograms of heroin discreetly concealed within 88 soapboxes. Three individuals hailing from Dholai, identified as Baharaul Alam Laskar (22), Rahul Ahmed Laskar and Nakbar Hussain Laskar (22), were taken into custody. The estimated market value of the heroin seized during the operation is believed to be in the crores.

The commendable efforts of the Cachar Police did not go unnoticed, as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to applaud their achievement. In a Facebook post, he stated, “Acting on a tip-off, Cachar Police intercepted a vehicle and recovered 88 soapboxes containing 1.15 kg of suspected heroin at Kabuganj, Sonai. The police nabbed three persons in the incident. Kudos to Assam Police!”

These two successful operations conducted in the same day underscore the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat the menace of drug trafficking in the region, sending a strong message that illegal narcotics will not find a safe haven in Cachar or Assam.
