Man stabs a woman over land-dispute in Cachar; Police complaint lodged

On Thursday, a 40-year-old widow was attacked while she was walking back towards her home. The man came from behind and pushed her to the ground. The man, identified as Ripon Hussain Barbhuiya, attacked her with a sharp weapon, almost killing her. He tried to flee the spot leaving the woman (Nehara Begum Laskar), bleeding on the spot. The incident happened in the Baskandi Bazar area of Lakhipur at around 8 pm.

When locals saw the woman bleeding on the ground, they rushed her to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Her relatives informed that this is a land-related dispute. Ripon Hussain Barbhuiya is a neighbour of Nehara Begum.

After Baskandi Police were informed about this incident, they reached the spot and a case was filed. The police force was successful in nabbing the criminal on the same night. A relative of Nehara present at the hospital said, “Ripon is a serial offender and this violent attack on Nehara Begum is nothing for him. He has attacked many people in the past as well”.

“The lady who was attacked was defenceless and when she fell on the ground, she couldn’t do anything. Ripon had attacked her head repeatedly with a sharp dagger and the throat was also slit. We demand life imprisonment of this dangerous criminal”, the relative further added.

Nehara Begum was admitted to the hospital last night in a very critical state. The relatives have revealed that her condition is still critical and she is fighting for life. On the other hand, the arrested criminal, Ripon is now in the custody of Lakhipur Police and will be produced in the court tomorrow. It is worth mentioning here that, during the investigation process, there were many such cases of violence found registered against him at different police stations.
