
Massive fire in Sonai Bazar; 7 shops, 3 vehicles burnt to ashes, two buildings partly damaged
A massive fire broke at the Sonai Bazar area in Cachar last night (today morning). At around 1:45 am, locals saw huge flames coming out from the area. Immediately they informed the local police station and fire brigade. The residents tried to bring the flames under control but the fire kept spreading wild.
Engines from Dholai, Silchar, and Sonai Fire Stations rushed to the spot. The fire was brought under control at around 4:00 am in morning.
It is feared that as many as six shops have burnt down to ashes. It included three to four furniture shops and few other wholesalers. “I had four sets of furniture ready and was supposed to deliver them today for Rs 15 lakh. All four sets are burnt. My machines got damaged, the stock is finished,” said owner of a furniture store that got burnt.
Three vehicles also caught fire and have got completely damaged. There were a couple of RCC buildings located near furniture stores. About 50 per cent of those two buildings have also got damaged.
The locals said they were astonished to see such high flames. “We have seen fire break in residential and commercial areas. But the flames were so huge here that it left us all in shock. The cumulative damage would be more than a couple of crores. Such was the devastation,” said a senior citizen who lives in the locality.
The Police said they are investigating the matter in association with the Firemen and they are yet to establish the source of the fire.
