Massive Timber Seizure in Lakhipur: Cachar Police Bust Illegal Operation

In a significant crackdown on illegal logging, a substantial quantity of contraband timber has been seized by the police in Lakhipur, Cachar. The timber was recovered from the Barak River, located near the Lakhipur Forest Range Office, during a night raid conducted by the authorities.

The illegal logging and destruction of forests have been rampant in Lakhipur for a considerable period. A faction of the timber mafia has been carrying out this unlawful activity, wreaking havoc on the reserved forests of Lakhipur. There have been persistent allegations that this destruction is being facilitated with the cooperation of the Lakhipur Forest Range Officer and other forest officials.

The recent police operation once again highlighted the ongoing devastation of Lakhipur’s forests. Acting on a tip-off, the police launched a night-time raid and seized approximately 300 cubic feet of contraband timber from the Barak River at Fulertol in Lakhipur. The market value of the seized timber exceeds Rs 10 lakh.

The timber was found just 500 meters away from the Lakhipur Forest Range Office, raising concerns about the proximity and potential involvement of forest officials. This proximity suggests a brazen operation with the potential complicity of those meant to protect the forests.

The scale of the operation and the volume of timber seized underline the severity of the illegal logging activities in the area. The police are continuing their investigations to identify the individuals involved and to dismantle the network responsible for the illegal logging.
