MLA Kamalakhya Dey Under Scrutiny: Barak Valley Citizens Forum Demands Action Over Assembly Remarks

A citizens’ group in Barak Valley has demanded action against Katigorah MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha over remarks he allegedly made in the Assam Legislative Assembly, accusing him of insulting the teaching community and admitting that he had made false statements during his previous terms in the House.

Addressing a press conference at the Silchar Press Club on Monday (July 27), members of the Barak Valley Citizens Forum strongly criticised the MLA’s comments and submitted an appeal to Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass, seeking appropriate action against him. The forum also demanded that the MLA publicly apologise to teachers.

Forum convenor Sankar Dey said the organisation condemns the MLA’s remarks and believes he no longer has the moral right to continue as a legislator. He claimed that during the Assembly session, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha stated that many of the things he had said in the House during his previous tenures were false. According to Dey, such an admission amounts to acknowledging that he had manipulated facts and failed to uphold the oath of truthfulness taken as an elected representative. On that basis, the forum has urged the Speaker to take appropriate action.

The forum also objected to another statement allegedly made by the MLA regarding the teacher recruitment process. According to the organisation, the MLA said that in the past, the selection process allowed “goons” or “hooligans” to be appointed as teachers. The forum alleged that this remark insulted the entire teaching profession and those serving as teachers, and demanded an unconditional public apology.

Educationist Prof. Niranjan Dutta said the MLA should clarify which statements made during his earlier terms in the Assembly were allegedly false. He also called for a privilege motion to be brought against the MLA, alleging that such remarks undermine the dignity and sanctity of the Legislative Assembly. Prof. Dutta further said he felt personally insulted by the comments about teachers and urged the MLA to apologise without delay.

Educationist and social worker Ashok Kumar Deb said repeated controversial remarks inside the Assembly should not go unchecked, warning that failing to act could create a negative impression among the public.
