No permission for a Bangali Samabesh in Khanapara; Barak-Bramhaputra poles apart on the bill

After 42 independent religious, ethnic and students organisations launched an attack on the Bangali Samabesh scheduled on November 17, 2018, today, the administration ensured that permission won’t be granted for any such gathering in Khanapara. In fact, a senior official went on to say that no organisation has asked for any permission for a gathering in the veterinary ground in Khanapara.

43 organisations held a joint press conference yesterday and warned the state government to stop the Bangali Samabesh or else they would bring the State to a standstill by obstructing each and every mode of communication. Not only that, but they also called for a 12-hour strike on October 23, 2018, to mark their protest against Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016.

Akhil Gogoi voiced his opinion on the matter. He said that the JPC has cheated the Assamese community. “Keeping more than 100 organisations as the witnesses, they promised a visit before submitting the report. But, they are now going ahead and submitting it without visiting Assam,” he said. He extended his support to the strike called on October 23, 2018.

Not only Gogoi, the BJP’s ally in Assam AGP too, is against the Bill. Under the leadership of Atul Borah a team is set to visit Meerut and meet Rajendra Agarwal, the chairman of Joint Parliamentary Committee which will submit its report to Parliament. Former Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta threatened BJP of breaking the alliance in Assam if the bill is passed in the coming winter session of Parliament.

So far, we have not received any comment from the spokespeople of the Bangali Samabesh. But it is clear that the days ahead will see a lot of polarisation in Assam.
