Notorious Theft Suspect Arrested After 4-km Chase in Cachar
A suspected repeat offender linked to at least two recent theft cases was arrested after a dramatic four-kilometre chase by police in Cachar’s Gumrah area on Friday. The accused, identified as Sarimul Haque of Jalalpur village in West Katigorah, allegedly attacked police personnel with a sharp weapon while attempting to evade arrest before being apprehended.
The accused was arrested by a team from the Gumrah Police Investigation Centre (PIC) during a special operation led by Officer-in-Charge Pranab Mili.
According to police, Sarimul allegedly attempted to escape arrest by attacking police personnel with a sharp weapon. He then fled from the spot and ran for nearly four kilometres in an effort to evade capture. Police personnel chased him and eventually managed to apprehend him after a prolonged pursuit.
Investigators said Sarimul is suspected to be involved in several theft cases in the area. Preliminary findings have linked him to a burglary at the residence of Babla Chakraborty in Bhairabpalli about a month ago.
Police also suspect his involvement in a theft reported at the wholesale grocery shop of Swaraj Nath in Kushiarkul Bazar on Tuesday night. Further investigation is underway, and police are examining his possible links to other theft incidents in the region.
