People should think wisely while voting in LS polls: ACKHSA

Silchar: The All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA), on Sunday, said people should think wisely while voting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as they government has failed to fulfill its promises in the past five years, especially the revival of the Cachar Paper Mill in Barak Valley.

Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, advisor to the association told reporters at a news conference in Silchar that Prime Minister Narendra Modi while campaigning at Kalinagar in Barak Valley in 2014 said the government would bring industrial development in Assam if the BJP came to power, but nothing has happened till date, he said.

A large number of people (including the mill’s workers and their families) have been suffering for the past several months due to non-payment of salaries. 51 workers have died since the two mills (Cachar Paper Mill and Nagaon Paper Mill) ceased functioning. Among them, two have committed suicide, he said, and blamed poverty, trauma and lack of medical treatment for the deaths.

He said the common masses should think wisely while exercising their voting right in the upcoming election.

Purkayastha also spoke about few other assurances by the government while campaigning for the 2014 elections and said the government had said that detention camps in Assam would be demolished if the BJP came to power, but the number of detention camps has increased rather. The government had also assured that the East-West corridor project would be completed, but has failed to fulfill the promise, he said.

Association members Nikita Banik and Sukumal Das were also present.
