For the first time in the history of Silchar domestic football, Ragini Kumari Singh has created a feat by referring as a female referee. She conducted the match as an Assistant Referee in the Samayik Prasanga Women’s football match on Friday. With this feat, Ragini created history in the books of the local football, which will most probably attract more women prospect to this game in the coming days. Ragini is a burning example of the fact that women are no longer left behind in any field of society.
In December last year, during the UEFA Champions League match between Juventus and Dynamo Kyiv, Stéfanie Frappart refereed the match. It was the first instance of a female referee conducting a match in Champions League history. But even a few years back, barely anybody gave any thought to such a feat. On a similar note, nobody thought about a woman refereeing a match in the land of Silchar. But women like Ragini proved once again that they are not behind in any aspect anymore.
Ragini herself was very happy to be able to achieve something like that. “I was a little nervous in the first half. But I have enjoyed it very much from the first minute of the second half”, she told Barak Bulletin.
The first female referee of Silchar said that she received a lot of help from everyone from the referee branch of Silchar District Sports Association. However, on a special note, she mentioned Referee Branch Secretary Tapan Das and National Referee Nirmal Bhattacharjee. Ragini said, ‘Tapan Sir has encouraged me a lot from the beginning. Supported all the time. I got a lot of help from Nirmal Sir too.”
Ragini is a resident of the Burnie Breas Tea Estate in the Hailakandi district. She had a special interest in football since childhood. She has represented both the districts of Hailakandi and Silchar in district level football. Ragini has always received support from her family. Her success is a piece of great news for Silchar’s footballing circuit. The referee branch of the DSA should also be given credit for this. This year, Ragini was supposed to give the CAT 5 test of the Assam Football Association. But at the very last moment, it was postponed by the Assam Football Association. They have not released any new schedule yet. But by any means, Ragini has made a great start to her career by acting as a referee in the domestic football of Silchar on Friday.
