River Barak flowing over danger level again at Annapurna Ghat; landslide kills youth in Hailakandi

At 11:00 am today, river Barak has crossed the danger level of 19:83 metre and was recorded flowing at 19:88 metre. This is the second time in one month, the river is flowing over the danger level at Annapurna Ghat in Silchar.

This rise in the waterlevel of the river comes as a nightmare for the people of Silchar. As the river-water level rises, the Sluice Gates are kept shut. As a result of which, the waterlogging continues and rain water flood wrecks havoc in the residential areas. Large part of the town is still under water and the downpour continues.

The experts are forecasting the water level to rise further as the rainwater will continue to flow from the mountains even if the rainfall stops in Barak Valley. Currently, in Silchar’s Annapurna Ghat, the water level is rising at 7 cm per hour.

Ghumra, Kakra, Boleshwar rivers have flooded into the residential areas of Katigorah area. The Indo-Bangla international border in Katigorah is flooded. Madhura and Jatinga river are also flowing over the danger level. It is worth mentioning here that the Water Resources department went and conducted renovation work braving the heavy rainfall yesterday at the Betukandi embankment.

Meanwhile, devastating news coming in from Hailakandi district. Young resident of Hailakandi’s Katlicherra area lost his life due to a landslide. Identified as Bahar Uddin Laskar, the young boy had gone for fishing at around 9:00 am in the morning. While he was catching fishes, a gigantic piece of slipped land fell over him and he lost his life on the spot. Hailakandi Police has recovered his dead body and sent it for post mortem.
