He said that the people of Silchar would receive better facilities under the new civic administration.
Paul also announced that each councillor would receive Rs 1 crore from the Chief Minister to undertake development works in their respective wards.
Minister Kaushik Rai described the occasion as a historic moment for Silchar, noting that the city had held its first municipal corporation elections, with all 42 councillors taking their oaths and the city getting its first Mayor. He expressed hope that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor would lead the corporation towards greater development over the next five years.
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Ministers Kaushik Rai and Krishnendu Paul, Rajya Sabha MPs Kanad Purkayastha and Sushmita Dev, several MLAs from the Barak Valley, along with political leaders and party workers.
