Silchar: 7-Month Pregnant Woman Dies, Husband Held After Family Cries Murder

A 7-month pregnant woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Silchar’s Madhurbond area, with her family alleging that she was brutally murdered by her husband. The accused, identified as Biru Miya, has been arrested based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family.

The deceased, Rabia Begum, a resident of Dighali under Jirighat in Cachar district, had been married to Biru Miya for around six years and was the mother of two young children. According to the family, she was subjected to prolonged physical abuse, allegedly linked to her husband’s extramarital affair.

As per family statement the accused informed the woman’s father late on Monday night that her condition was critical and asked the family to come immediately if they wished to see her. When the family reached the house, they found no one present and later went to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where Rabia was found dead on a stretcher.

Family members alleged that there were visible injury marks on her body, including signs of strangulation and trauma to the abdomen. They claim that she was assaulted and killed so that the accused could continue his relationship with another woman, whom he allegedly married two months ago.

The victim’s brother told reporters that Rabia had been facing abuse for years. He said a mediation meeting had earlier been held to resolve disputes between the couple, but the situation worsened over time. He alleged that the accused frequently assaulted Rabia and that neighbours were also aware of the violence. He further claimed that she was beaten severely on the day of the incident and that her pregnancy made the assault even more fatal.

Following the complaint, police arrested Biru Miya from Silchar Medical College on Monday night. He is currently in custody and is being interrogated.

Meanwhile, the accused has denied all allegations, claiming that his wife died by suicide. Speaking to the media outside the police station, he admitted to having an extramarital affair but insisted that he did not kill his wife. He said his wife had been suspicious of him but maintained that he was not responsible for her death.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage in the area, with locals condemning the brutality of the case. The victim’s family has demanded strict punishment, including the death penalty, for the accused. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of death.
