Silchar Gets Amarendra Paul as Mayor, Bijendra Prasad Singh as Deputy Mayor

BJP MLA from Silchar Rajdeep Roy has shared the names of Amarendra Paul and Bijendra Prasad Singh as the party’s choices for Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC), respectively.

The announcement was made in a social media post featuring the two leaders. Extending his best wishes, Roy expressed hope that both leaders would take on their responsibilities and work towards the continued development of Silchar.

Minister Kaushik Rai also congratulated the two leaders, extending his heartfelt wishes to the newly elected Mayor Amarendra Kumar Paul and Deputy Mayor Bijendra Prasad Singh.

The announcement comes after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a dominant victory in the first Silchar Municipal Corporation election, giving the alliance control over the civic body.

Polling was held on October 3 across 40 of the corporation’s 42 wards, as candidates in the remaining two wards had already been elected un-opposed, both from the BJP. Counting of votes and the official declaration of results took place on October 6, 2026.

The BJP won 32 wards, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured two seats, taking the NDA’s total to 34 out of 42. Congress won two wards, while six Independent candidates also emerged victorious.

With the BJP holding a commanding majority in the corporation, the proposed leadership will now face the task of turning the party’s electoral promises into visible improvements in the city’s civic infrastructure and public services.

The BJP had outlined nearly 100 proposals in its Municipal Corporation Sankalp Patra ahead of the election. Among its major commitments was addressing Silchar’s long-standing waterlogging problem. The party promised pumping stations in flood-prone areas, widening and deepening of major drains, including Rangirkhal, Bachaikhal, Longaikhal, Singirkhal and Town Khal, along with improved drainage connections to the Ghagra and Barak rivers.

Reliable drinking water supply was another major promise. The party proposed repairing and replacing ageing pipelines, constructing new overhead tanks and expanding existing facilities, with the goal of providing round-the-clock drinking water.

Other key commitments included 100 per cent door-to-door garbage collection, waste segregation, improved roads and footpaths, better street lighting, organised parking facilities and measures to reduce traffic congestion.

The Sankalp Patra also proposed a ‘Smart Silchar App’ to help residents access municipal services, register complaints and track their progress. A 24-hour integrated emergency response system was among the other commitments.
