Silchar-Haflong Highway Hit by Massive Landslide
Heavy rainfall triggered a major landslide on the Silchar-Haflong National Highway at Durbin Tilla on Saturday, disrupting traffic movement completely and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
A large portion of the hill suddenly collapsed onto the highway with a loud noise amid continuous rainfall in the region. Huge rocks and mud rolled down onto the road, creating panic among commuters travelling through the area. The terrifying incident was captured on a mobile phone camera by a passenger who was present at the spot during the landslide.
The landslide blocked the national highway entirely, causing severe inconvenience to travellers as long queues of small and heavy vehicles remained stuck on both sides of the route.
A witness said the entire incident unfolded right in front of him. He stated that the situation could have turned into a major accident had company workers not been present at the spot. According to him, workers immediately began clearing the debris after the landslide. He added that one side of the road was cleared for movement, while the other side remained blocked.
The witness further stated that the workers present at the spot were from Sushee Infra. The company is involved in infrastructure and highway construction projects across different parts of India, and their presence helped avoid a larger tragedy as they immediately started clearing the road after the landslide.
Authorities have reportedly initiated efforts to bring the situation under control and clear the highway for the restoration of traffic movement. Continuous rainfall, however, continues to pose challenges in the hill section of the route.
