Silchar Jail Escapee in Naz Murder Case Killed in Encounter by Cachar Police near Meghalaya Border
Silchar Jail administration and the entire state of Assam were left in shock on May 11 when two convicts managed to escape from their life imprisonment cells. However, in a recent development, Hifzur Rahman, one of the escaped convicts, was traced near the Meghalaya border by Cachar Police early this morning. An alleged confrontation ensued, resulting in Rahman being shot and sustaining fatal injuries. He was immediately rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Hifzur Rahman was convicted in the high-profile Naz murder case. The case involved the abduction and subsequent murder of 20-year-old student Ahrar Ahmed, popularly known as Naz Ahmed. The victim was the son of Tofail Ahmed, the AIUDF President of Badarpur. Naz’s bullet-ridden body was discovered five days after his abduction, in a village located 15 kilometers away from his residence. The brutal murder sparked violent outrage, leading to further unrest when Tofail Ahmed was also shot in the head. The authorities had to impose a curfew as the violence escalated, with houses and shops being set ablaze.
Rahman’s escape from Silchar Central Jail on May 11 had raised concerns among state officials, fearing a potential outbreak of violence in the Bangha area where the crime had taken place. His recapture was therefore a high priority for the police and prison authorities.
During the encounter near the Meghalaya border, Rahman, according to Police sources, attacked the officials, prompting the police to respond with gunfire. While the official confirmation is still awaited and the Superintendent of Police for Cachar remains unreachable, sources have indicated that a couple of police officials sustained injuries during the altercation.
The incident also highlights the need for enhanced security measures within prisons to prevent such escapes in the future. The incident will likely prompt a review of security protocols and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
The police and prison authorities are expected to release an official statement soon, providing further details about the encounter and the events leading up to Rahman’s death. The aftermath of the incident may also involve renewed efforts to apprehend the remaining escapee, Deep Nunia, and tighten security measures in Silchar Jail to prevent further incidents of this nature.
