Silchar on Edge as CRPF Deployed Following Suspected Beef Seizure and Protest

Tension gripped the Ghoniala area of Malugram in Silchar on Sunday (August 2) after a suspected beef seizure led to protests by members of Bajrang Dal, followed by clashes involving local residents. Police said the situation is now under control, with security personnel deployed in the area.

According to information available, Bajrang Dal members intercepted an e-rickshaw in Ghoniala after receiving information that suspected beef was being transported from a house in the locality. The e-rickshaw driver was stopped and later handed over to the police.

Police subsequently detained the e-rickshaw driver and another person from the house where the alleged slaughter is suspected to have taken place. During the protest, another individual reportedly arrived at the scene and raised the slogan “Allahu Akbar”. This triggered fresh tension, following which some protesters allegedly assaulted the man before police intervened and took him into custody.

With these developments, a total of three people were detained in connection with the incident.

Following the alleged seizure, Bajrang Dal members staged a road blockade and raised slogans, including “Jehadi Mindset Murdabad” and “Islamic Jehadis Murdabad”, demanding strict legal action against those involved.

Addressing the media, a Bajrang Dal activist claimed that the organisation had received information around 9 am that a cow had allegedly been slaughtered in the Malugram Ghoniala Road area and that the meat was being delivered to different homes. He questioned whether the state’s ban on cow slaughter was being effectively enforced and alleged that Hindu sentiments were being repeatedly hurt. He warned that if those responsible were not brought under legal action within 24 hours, the organisation would intensify its protest and block all roads leading to Malugram. He also claimed that around two kilograms of suspected beef had been handed over to the police and accused those involved of engaging in other activities that he described as anti-Hindu.

Police and CRPF personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any further escalation. Authorities said the situation remains under control, and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Speaking to the media, Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rajat Kumar Pal said that police received information about the incident and immediately reached the spot. He said additional police personnel and CRPF were also deployed to bring the situation under control. He assured that a thorough investigation would be carried out and appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings.

The claims made by the protesting organisation have not been independently verified, and police have not yet issued a detailed official statement regarding the allegations or the nature of the seized meat.
