Silchar Woman Feared to Have Jumped into Barak River with 4-Year-Old Child, Probe Continues

A woman and her four-year-old child are feared to have fallen or jumped into the Barak River from the Annapurnaghat bridge in Silchar, though police have not yet confirmed that the incident actually took place.

The incident came to light after a woman’s pair of slippers, a child’s pair of slippers and a side bag were found on the bridge. Following the information, police reached the spot and began an investigation, while the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a search operation in the river.

A local resident said he was told that a woman had jumped from the bridge along with a child. He identified the woman as his sister-in-law, and said the child was believed to be four-year-old Akash. According to him, they were from the Chotodudhpatil area.

However, the local resident clarified that he did not witness the incident himself. He said he heard about the alleged jump from other people after reaching the area.

The woman has been identified as Diya Akura based on identification documents reportedly recovered from the purse found at the site. The documents contained her photograph and name. The address mentioned in the documents is Chotodudhpatil Grant in the Malugram area.

Police from Malugram reached the spot and took the recovered bag and slippers into their custody for investigation.

SDRF personnel are conducting a search in the Barak River to determine whether anyone is missing and to verify the reports of the alleged jump.

At present, there is no direct evidence or eyewitness account confirming that Diya Akura and the child entered the river. Police are therefore investigating all possibilities, including whether the items were left at the bridge for another reason.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to become clearer after the police investigation and the ongoing SDRF search.
