Sports fraternity of Silchar mourns untimely demise of cricketer Vikram Paul Choudhury

In a shocking turn of affairs, former district cricketer Vikram Paul Choudhury passed away. He was to turn forty on December 4 but before that death took him away. He is survived by his parents, wife and two children. The district cricket player was suffering from liver problems for some time. On November 27, he was admitted to a local nursing home but all the efforts went in vain. The former cricket star of the district team breathed his last at 2:42 am today as all the attempts by the doctors to revive him failed. People are having a hard time accepting his untimely demise. The sports fraternity is left in a state of mourning.

Today his body was taken to Silchar DSA in a procession. Players and sports officials paid their last respects to Vikram there. Members of Shyamaprasad Road Sarbojonin Durga Puja Committee also paid their tributes. Tribute was also paid on behalf of India Club.

Vikram started his career in 1994 at only 14 years of age. He first played sporting a Student AC’s jersey. Later onwards he played successfully for Green Hornet Club, India Club and Vijayi Sangha. He also played for the state team and was a member of the under 23 State team in the 2002-03 season. He played in the under 18, under 19 and senior teams of the district. Paul Choudhury was a regular member of the district team as a right-handed middle-order batsman. He has many memorable innings to his name in inter-district cricket at the junior and senior levels.

Vikram was a member of the Cricket Branch of the current committee of DSA, a member of the executive committee of India Club and a member of Silchar Veteran Cricketers Club as well. He was a part-time pacer at the beginning of his career but gave up bowling owing to his back pain.

He was also a successful businessman. Apart from the current generation of cricketers, former players were also present on his last journey. Anyone who received the heartbreaking news rushed to the crematorium to pay their last tributes to Vikram. His last rites were performed at seven o’clock in the night.
