Sribhumi: Four Arrested in Patharkandi Mob Assault Case

Police have arrested four people in connection with an alleged mob assault on two teenage boys in the Nalugaon area of Patharkandi. One of the accused is alleged to have used an air gun during the attack. The incident took place on June 4 and came to light after videos of the assault circulated widely on social media.

The arrested persons have been identified as Shyamal Sinha of Rajargaon, Monthon Sinha of Nalugaon, Dudumoni Sinha of Rajargaon and Bhaskar Sinha of Nalugaon. Police said Shyamal Sinha is accused of using the air gun. All four were produced before the Karimganj District Court after their arrest.

The videos, which showed two boys being attacked by a group of people, prompted a police investigation. The boys were allegedly suspected of cattle theft by local residents.

According to family members, the injured boys, aged between 13 and 15, are residents of Mambari in Sribhumi district. They said the boys had gone out in search of cattle that had wandered away while grazing near the bypass area. After locating a calf, the teenagers were reportedly returning home through Nalugaon when they were stopped and questioned by local residents.

Family members alleged that despite telling the crowd that the animal belonged to their family, the boys were accused of theft and assaulted. They claimed the teenagers were beaten with sticks and chased when they tried to flee. Relatives further alleged that an air gun was used during the attack. Videos shared online appear to show pellets being fired in the direction of the victims.

The injured boys were first taken to Patharkandi Hospital and later referred to Karimganj Civil Hospital for further treatment. Family members said both remain under medical care.

Relatives also said that the father of one of the injured boys, who is paralysed, was unable to visit his son in hospital because of his condition.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the assault and are seeking to determine whether the attack was solely based on suspicion of cattle theft or if other factors were involved.

The incident has drawn concern across the region, with residents calling for a fair investigation and appropriate action against those found responsible. Police have not yet released a detailed statement on the allegations.
