Sribhumi Poll Violence: Victim Alleges BJP Members Assaulted Him, Says “they Pushed my Mother”
A violent incident was reported at a polling station in Sribhumi town under the North Karimganj constituency on Thursday, where a voter was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon, leading to serious injuries. The injured person has been identified as Atanu Deb, who is currently undergoing treatment at Karimganj Civil Hospital.
According to allegations made by the victim, BJP supporters carried out the attack inside a polling centre, creating panic among voters and disrupting the voting process. Atanu Deb stated that a group of individuals entered the premises caused chaos and allegedly assaulted him after a brief confrontation. He further claimed that the situation escalated rapidly, leaving those inside the booth frightened and confused.
Deb clarified that he is an ordinary voter with no political affiliation and had simply gone to cast his vote with his family when the incident took place. He emphasised that he does not engage in political activities and described the assault as unprovoked.
Deb said the incident occurred at a polling station in Ward No. 8, Speaking from the hospital, Deb described himself as a non-political individual and said he had gone to cast his vote with family members when the incident unfolded.
“I am an ordinary citizen. To me Hindus and Muslims are the same. I do not do politics, but today I was beaten,” he said, adding that he could identify at least two of the attackers, including a person named Janmajeet.
Recounting the events, Deb said tension began building outside the polling station while he was inside with his mother, sister, sister in law, aunt, and niece. Following the tension security personnel allegedly restricted both entry and exit for nearly half an hour, which heightened anxiety among those present.
“We were not allowed to come out and others were not allowed to go in. My mother was scared, but I tried to calm her,” he said.
He further alleged that when the doors were eventually opened, a group of around 20 to 25 people entered, triggering chaos inside the premises. Deb claimed that some individuals attempted to forcibly take away a person he identified as Mohon Dey, believed to be present as a polling agent.
“When my sister-in-law asked me to help, I intervened and managed to pull him out. Then one man, Janmajeet, asked who I was and suddenly struck me with something. After that, several others joined in and started assaulting me,” Deb alleged.
He also claimed that his mother was pushed aside when she tried to shield him from the attackers. “My mother was begging them to stop. When she tried to protect me, they threw her away,” he said.
Deb maintained that he does not know all those who attacked him but insisted that the assault was unprovoked. The situation in the area was reported to be tense following the incident.
