The students of Assam University have sat for an agitation today at the University gate with a list of demands. Unless, their demands are fulfilled they have threatened to continue their agitation. Their list of demands to the authorities include :
Postponement of Semester Exams : UGC mandates that classes have to taken for 90 days before conducting semester exams. But the Assam University conducted classes for only 78 days and have scheduled the semester exams from March 28 by publishing the routine just 11 days before the exams. Hence the students of the University are demanding postponement of their exams to April month so that they can prepare well.
Provision of Drinking Water: The students of the University have urged the authorities to provide necessary drinking water facilities in the University campus.
Cancellation of CUET exams for admission in Assam University: The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) exams used to be conducted for admission into TDC courses before and now it is also conducted for admission into Post Graduation courses. However, in various colleges of Barak Valley as well as North East, the final exams are held in June and July while CUET is conducted in May month. Hence students of Barak Valley aren’t able to appear for CUET exams and take admission in Assam University.
Bus shortage : The students paid 3000 rupees for bus facility but they are being deprived of buses due to shortage. Only 17 buses have been alloted for the students. Students from Silchar, Karimganj and Hailakandi aren’t able to avail of the bus facility properly. Hence, adequate number of buses have to provided for the students of the University.
