Tragic Death in Cachar: Man Dies allegedly Due to Stress After Forced Eviction for Bharatmala Project

A heart-wrenching incident has come to light from Lathimara area of Katigorah constituency, Cachar district where an aged man, identified as Mohbat Ali Majumdar, has tragically passed away after allegedly enduring immense mental stress caused by a forced eviction for the Bharatmala highway project. The incident occurred in the wake of the administration’s demolition drive, which the family has accused has led to severe emotional and physical strain on the individual.

As part of the Bharatmala project, the administration initiated an eviction at Mohbat Ali’s residence. According to family members, the eviction was carried out without any compensation or prior notice, which left Ali and his family in a state of financial and emotional turmoil. Since then, Ali had been struggling with anxiety and mental health issues, deeply distressed by the loss of his home and livelihood.

The family claims that the stress caused by the eviction led to a fatal heart attack. “The pressure from the administration was too much for him to handle. They demolished our home without offering any compensation or support, and this pushed him into deep distress. His death was a result of the unbearable stress,” said a relative of the deceased.

The local MLA Khalil Uddin commented on this issue, saying, “Many people still haven’t received compensation. There is some corruption with the files, and some are being kept aside. I have learned that someone passed away yesterday due to agony and financial crisis. We have been in touch with the ADC for a long time. Some people from Katigorah area have complained and informed us that their houses are being demolished. We have requested a few days’ time. We agree that there will be roads for development, but how can people go elsewhere if they don’t receive money?”

This incident has sparked outrage in the local community, with residents expressing concern over the impact of forced evictions for large-scale infrastructure projects. Many people are calling for a more humane approach to such displacements, demanding proper compensation and rehabilitation measures for those affected. The administration is yet to make a comment on the issue or react to the allegations pressed by the family members and neighbours.
