Udharbond: Khaspur Comes Alive with Karam Puja Celebrations, MLA Expresses Gratitude

The 16th Central Karam Puja and Cultural Conference was held at the playground of Khaspur Tea Garden in Udharbond, Cachar, on Tuesday (September 22), with thousands of people from different tea gardens participating in the celebrations.

The event was organised by the Barak Valley Adivasi Tea Community and Karam Puja Conference Central Committee. Various cultural programmes and activities were held as part of the event, which highlighted the traditions, culture and significance of Karam Puja among the tea community.

Artists from different tea gardens performed Jhumur dance during the programme. Radio artist Baba Kurmi and singer Rashmi Kurmi also participated in the event.

Addressing the media, Udharbond MLA Rajdeep Goala said the Karam Puja event was organised as a central celebration for the tea tribes of Barak Valley. He thanked the organisers for holding the central event at Khaspur Tea Garden, which falls under his constituency. “Every year they do it in different places. This year it was done here,” he said.

Speaking about the cultural significance of Karam Puja, Goala said the tea communities have an animistic tradition in which nature is worshipped. He also highlighted their contribution towards protecting nature and extended his wishes to everyone on the occasion.

Goala also expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for declaring Karam Puja a government holiday.

The programme also featured discussions on the heritage, traditions and cultural practices of the tea communities, along with the significance of Karam Puja.
