Why Bengali not an official language of Assam questions Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha
North Karimganj Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha held a press conference and told that his party workers will visit the houses of Bengali people and tell them about the reality of BJP regarding NRC and delimitation through “Hath Se Hath Milao” programme. More such programmes will be taken in future. Recently Dey Purkayastha went to Tinsukia and he observed that the population of Bengalis is around 75,000 in the area who constitute a majority. In Dibrugarh also about 45,000-50,000 Bengalis live. In almost every constituency of Assam about 20,000-25,000 Bengalis live but ironically they have been deprived of their rights.
States like Gujarat and Bihar have 3-4 state languages. West Bengal has 11 state languages. Why is the same not followed in Assam then questioned Dey Purkayastha. Despite the Boro population being 5% in Assam, Boro language has been made one of the official languages in Assam alongwith Assamese. But even though the Bengali population in Assam is 30%, Bengali is not an official language of the state.
“Who all suffered due to NRC? We want answers. We will raise questions in Assembly and then personally visit people telling them about the sad affairs of our state” told Kamalakhya.
Regarding Clause 6, 1971 was mentioned as the cut off year in Assam Accord but after BJP came to power they decided the cut off year as 1951. Biplab Sarma committee submitted the report regarding implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord and the CM told it will be executed letter for letter. But where is Clause 6 now? I believe Clause 6 and Citizenship Amendment Act won’t be implemented. These are only means to scare Bengalis and deprive them of jobs and their rights in every sphere. The time has come to give them a befitting reply.
