Why is the BJP government afraid to bring the two-child policy to control Muslim population? Questions Cachar District Congress

Starting from the Assam Vidhan Sabha election campaign to many other occasions as well, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has hinted that the Muslim population in the state is growing faster comparatively than other communities. Recently, JP Nadda, on behalf of the BJP’s central leadership, has also spoken in the same tone. Basing on that, the Cachar District Congress has sent a message to Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday. The primary question of the District Congress was, “If the Chief Minister and other BJP leaders think that the Muslim population is growing rapidly, why isn’t the two-child bill being introduced yet?”

A press conference was held at the District Congress office on Thursday. Misbahul Islam Laskar and Khalil Uddin Majumder, the two Congress MLAs from the Cachar district as well as other candidates and party officials took part in it. In that press meet, they tried to expose the various failures of the BJP government.

The district Congress said, “In the current situation, the BJP can pass any bill at any given time. It has passed many complicated bills in the last few years, so why can’t it bring the mandatory two-child bill? Himanta Biswa Sarma has made himself an influential person over the years. Although he has spoken a lot against Muslims, he has not been able to show the courage to introduce a bill of two children policy to force population control. The figures he has provided regarding the growth of the Muslim population are also false and unfounded. We are not putting out this information but the Central Government is.”

They also criticized the BJP government for the price hike. They said, “The BJP leaders are harassing the common people on other issues in such a way that no one gets a chance to think about the issue of price hike. The prices of goods have almost doubled in the last year and the government has remained silent despite repeated questions. The people have been also misled by the religious sentiments surrounding the elections so much that they have forgotten the basic issues and voted for the BJP on the basis of religion. This time the party leaders are raking in extra profit by conspiring to increase the prices of goods after forming the government.”

On May 2, 2021, the results of the assembly elections were declared and the Congress party won only two out of the six seats in the Cachar district. They were able to get four out of 15 seats in Barak Valley. From 2001 to 2016, the government lost assembly elections twice in a row, but there was not much discussion in this regard. Pradeep Dey, the District Congress President, admitted at the press conference on Thursday that the party has not yet reviewed the reasons for its poor performance, especially in this year’s elections. He also said that there has been no discussion on what action would be taken against the Congress workers who were involved in anti-party activities during the elections.

Borkhola MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar said, “No matter how big the BJP talk, they have deprived the local farmers. If the government had bought rice and other grains produced by the local farmers and distributed them to the people, there would have been potential for improvement in the agriculture sector of the area. Similarly, locals are not getting preference in government jobs of Barak Valley. Youth from Barpeta are joining as ward boys of Silchar Medical College & Hospital. Wasn’t there such a worthy candidate in our region? Only the BJP leaders get away by making false promises during the elections. ”

Recently, under the direction of the state government, the police are conducting operations against illicit drugs in several regions of the state. Almost every day, large quantities of drugs are seized and miscreants are getting arrested. In this context, the question of the Congress party is, “It cannot be the case that so many people have suddenly started smuggling drugs in the last two months only. They were already in the smuggling business for quite a long time and the police and the government knew about it. Now the operation is being carried out suddenly and arrests have started, why haven’t they done it all these months? There must be a lot of big personalities behind the chain.”

They also criticized the government over paper mill recovery, exorbitant electricity tariffs, various scandals in the name of coronavirus control, etc. The members of the Cachar District Congress Committee have thus raised various allegations against the ruling government.
